{"id":133,"date":"2014-12-26T02:40:46","date_gmt":"2014-12-26T10:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/?p=133"},"modified":"2015-02-09T05:09:04","modified_gmt":"2015-02-09T13:09:04","slug":"moms-terraced-planters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/?p=133","title":{"rendered":"Mom&#8217;s Terraced Planters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As always, racked my brain on what to get\/make mom for Christmas. \u00a0I eventually settled on a ladder-style planter for her to grow herbs or smaller flowers, but during my research into the different types of planters, I came across a series of terrace-style planters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1358.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-134 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1358-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1358\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1358-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1358-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1358.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> I settled on making two planters that had a right-angle corner. \u00a0That way the planters could either be placed in two separate corners of the garden, or the planters could be secured together side-by-side, to make one larger terraced planter. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t know what mom&#8217;s vision for her garden had in store, so I thought versatility would be appreciated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-135 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ziggurat-Planter-Corner-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Ziggurat Planter - Corner\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ziggurat-Planter-Corner-300x187.jpg 300w, http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ziggurat-Planter-Corner-1024x639.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/projects.swissninja.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ziggurat-Planter-Corner.jpg 1415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Drew up some plans in Sketchup, and then found a calculator online to help me get the compound angles I&#8217;d need to dial into my miter saw.<\/p>\n<p>Cut the planter sides out of normal cedar fence pickets that were found at the local big-box store, and reinforced the structure with a 2&#215;2 cedar &#8216;spine&#8217; at the right-angle corner. \u00a0I attempted to screw everything together, but the compound miter angles made it fairly difficult; I wound up putting long nails into my pin nailer, and just nailed the heck out of it.<\/p>\n<p>My initial design had two more terraces, but before I cut the boards I ran out to the car with the tape measure. \u00a0Two of the four terrace planters would fit in my car for transport on Christmas day. \u00a0Any more terraces, and I would have to do assembly there on Christmas day.<\/p>\n<p>Lessons Learned: Compound miters are really easy if you keep them to just one corner. \u00a0Also, if the cedar fence pickets were a little thicker, I probably wound have tried to use some kind of spline to help keep everything together.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t really think about it until the planters were done, but there&#8217;s a lot of wasted space in this style of planter that needs to be packed\u00a0with fill dirt. \u00a0I feel kind of bad that in giving my mom the planters for Christmas, I also inadvertently got my old man an extra chore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As always, racked my brain on what to get\/make mom for Christmas. \u00a0I eventually settled on a ladder-style planter for her to grow herbs or smaller flowers, but during my research into the different types of planters, I came across a series of terrace-style planters.
